The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a classic walking challenge of 24.5 miles (nearly 40km) of uphill and down dale; with the aim of completing the walk in under 12 hours. The Challenge takes in the summits of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough totalling an ascent of nearly 1,600m (that’s nearly 5,200ft, or just over five times the height of London’s The Shard Building).
Having taken part in LawNet’s challenges for the past 10 years, this year we thought we would seize upon the opportunity to raise some more money for the Brompton Fountain.
The Brompton Fountain is a charity close to our hearts, as our accounts assistant Maria’s little girl, Charlotte, underwent heart surgery in 2016.
Charlotte was born on 11 March 2014, and after a seemingly normal birth, within twelve hours we received the devastating news that there was something wrong with her heart – even before we had the chance to name her.
Over the next few weeks we discovered that Charlotte had a small hole in her heart and more seriously, patent ductus arteriosus and would need an operation. We were referred by our local hospital to the Royal Brompton Hospital and the care of Professor Alain Fraisse.
Luckily Charlotte was a fighter and she thrived despite her condition, so the decision was made to operate sooner than expected, before her second birthday.
The run up to the operation wasn’t straightforward – Charlotte contracted pneumonia five weeks before her op date. With the continued support from the wonderful team at the Brompton, assisting our local hospital with her care, Charlotte was soon on the mend and she finally underwent her cardiac catheterization procedure in January 2016.
“Charlotte is now a healthy, happy and cheeky little four-year-old, with only asthma to show any hint of what she has been through”
The Royal Brompton Hospital and the Rose Ward were, and continue to be, amazing in their support and care of families of babies and of young children with congenital heart conditions, just like Charlotte.
